The $0 AI Stack That Beats Most $500/mo Tools
The free AI automation stack — n8n, open models, and smart glue — that outperforms most $500/mo SaaS tools.

Small businesses are spending $300-$500 a month on SaaS subscriptions they don't need. CRM tools, social media schedulers, email automation platforms, chatbot builders — each one solves a single problem and charges a recurring fee for it. Here's the stack I use to replace all of them for almost nothing.
The Core: n8n (Free, Self-Hosted)
n8n is the backbone. It's an open-source workflow automation tool you can self-host on a $5/month VPS. It connects to 400+ services and lets you build complex automations visually. Zapier charges $49/month for 750 tasks. n8n self-hosted gives you unlimited tasks for the cost of a small server.
If you're not technical enough to self-host, n8n Cloud starts at $20/month — still a fraction of what most businesses pay across multiple SaaS tools.
The Brain: Open-Source Models
You don't always need GPT-4. For many automation tasks — text classification, summarization, translation, content generation — open-source models like Llama, Mistral, and DeepSeek are more than capable. Running them locally with tools like Ollama costs nothing per request.
I use a hybrid approach: open models for high-volume, low-stakes tasks (classification, routing, basic content), and GPT-4 only for tasks where reasoning quality directly affects the business outcome. This keeps API costs to $10-30/month for most clients.
The Glue: Free APIs You Already Have
- →Google Sheets as a database — the owner updates prices in a spreadsheet; the automation reads from it live
- →WhatsApp Business API — free for the first 1,000 conversations per month
- →Notion as a CRM — free tier covers small teams
- →Telegram Bot API — completely free, unlimited messages
- →GitHub Actions — free CI/CD for automated deployments and scheduled tasks
A Real Example
A client was paying $79/month for a social media scheduling tool, $49/month for a chatbot platform, and $29/month for a CRM. Total: $157/month, $1,884/year.
I replaced all three with: n8n ($5/month VPS) + OpenAI API ($15/month average usage) + Google Sheets (free) + Notion (free). Total: $20/month, $240/year. The automation was more flexible, fully owned by the client, and not dependent on any single SaaS company's pricing decisions.
"The cheapest tool is the one you own. The most expensive tool is the one you rent forever."
When To Pay For SaaS
I'm not anti-SaaS. There are situations where paying makes sense:
- →When your team lacks technical skills and needs a polished UI that self-hosted tools can't match
- →When the SaaS handles compliance, security, or data residency requirements you can't manage yourself
- →When the cost of building and maintaining a custom solution exceeds the subscription cost
But for most small businesses doing content automation, lead capture, and customer support — the free stack isn't just cheaper. It's more flexible, because you control the workflow end to end.
